Bringing Careers to Life: K–5 Students Explore Their Futures

Career exploration starts early in our district. Through a comprehensive K–5 career education unit, students begin building awareness of their interests, strengths, and the many opportunities available to them in the future.

At the elementary level, students engage in age-appropriate lessons designed to introduce and expand career awareness through varied ways, such as guests, activities, and field trips. To bring the unit to life, we conclude each year with a hands-on career experience that allows students to connect what they’ve learned to the real world.

Last year, A.W. Becker welcomed the Northeast Construction Trades Workforce Coalition, which introduced students to the wide range of careers within the construction industry. In addition to learning about trades and workforce opportunities, students participated in a fun, interactive building project that helped them better understand the skills involved in construction careers.

This year, students had the exciting opportunity to visit the New York State Police Air Unit at Albany Airport to explore careers in aviation. This was in coordination with the Federal Aviation Administration, through its STEM/AVSED (Aviation and Space Education) program, which is designed to spark student interest in aviation careers.

During the visit to the airport, students learned about the important and varied roles within the aviation field and saw firsthand some of the critical work performed by the New York State Police Air Unit. Representatives shared insights into the many pathways available in aviation from pilots and mechanics to engineers and air traffic controllers, each helping students understand that aviation careers extend far beyond the cockpit. Of couse students also got to see a variety of aircraft up close.

By combining classroom instruction with hands-on, real-world experiences, our elementary career unit helps students see that their interests and effort today can shape their opportunities tomorrow.
