Maple season has officially come to an end at Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk (RCS), and students at both A.W. Becker and Pieter B. Elementary Schools have plenty to celebrate after weeks of hands-on learning.
Over the past several weeks, students have been learning about the process of sugaring and participated in the full maple sugaring process, beginning with tapping trees on school grounds to collect sap. As the sap flowed, students carefully gathered and observed the process, learning firsthand how it is transformed into maple syrup. This experience provides a unique opportunity to explore science, nature, and local agricultural traditions in an engaging and memorable way.
To mark the end of the season, students celebrated their hard work with in classroom waffle parties featuring their very own in-house maple syrup on a waffle. The sweet reward was a highlight for many and a delicious way to recognize their efforts and learning.
Projects like this not only bring classroom lessons to life, but also help students develop a deeper appreciation for the natural world and the processes behind everyday products.
