Feature-A-Teacher: Meet the new Elementary Library Media Specialist Mrs. Wolfe!

Our next Feature-A-Teacher highlights the new Library Media Specialist, Mrs. Jenny Wolfe! Mrs. Wolfe transitioned from classroom teacher to library media specialist this year and is excited for all the new adventures this brings for her, the students, and the staff.

In today’s Q&A, she discusses the importance of using the library and how it can help students be their own drivers in their education and plan for the future. Thank you, Mrs. Wolfe, for all that you do for our students, staff, and families!

Please tell RCS a little bit about yourself!

Hi! I am Mrs. Wolfe. I have worked at RCS for 15 years. I was a first and second-grade teacher at A.W. Becker Elementary School, and now I am the Library Media Specialist for both PBC and AWB!

Outside of school, I love to read, explore new hiking trails, dance, and play tabletop games with friends and family.

Why is using the library so important in today's school curriculum?

A library is a place where all learners have the opportunity to access information in different ways. As a Library Media Specialist, I can curate print and digital content and create other experiences that help deepen students’ understanding of what they are learning in the classroom.

Beyond the joys and benefits of selecting and reading books, what other skills does the library provide our students?

Choosing a book is an exciting and joyful experience but also very empowering. When students select a book for enjoyment, they take more ownership of their learning and can connect to the information on a deeper level. As students read more, they are inspired to become writers, storytellers, and artists.

The library also provides a space where students can come together and share their information and ideas. In addition, learning how to thoughtfully, effectively, and safely access information digitally is a lifelong skill.

What are you most excited about working in the elementary libraries this year?

My number one goal is to create a love of reading. I have had such a great time welcoming students back into the library and helping them browse the shelves! It is so much fun when I can find the perfect match for a reader or challenge a student by introducing them to a new topic or genre. I love when students come by to tell me what they have learned or enjoyed! I also look forward to creating more opportunities for families to read together. I am also looking forward to updating our library catalog with new books!

What is your favorite memory of teaching at RCS?

I have so many memories to choose from! Some of my favorite memories are from Dance Crazy dance competitions and the drama club productions such as Wizard of Oz and Peter Pan.
