Fourth-grade students at Pieter B. Coeymans Elementary School led a thoughtful project to make their school environment more welcoming and vibrant. Students from Ms. Biel’s and Ms. Slater’s classes, with coordination and support from Ms. White, have been working on enhancing the outdoor arbor walkway in front of their school. The arbor was replaced at the end of the last school year by SABIC as part of an annual community day where employees volunteer in the community, creating a blank space for creativity and color.
As part of their project, students researched flowers and selected varieties they could grow from seeds. These flowers were grown by students and planted in the arbor garden beds, adding color and life to the space. The hands-on work in science, math, and gardening has been a meaningful way for students to learn about nature while giving back to their school community.
Adding to the collaboration, students teamed up with high school art students from Ms. Wallace’s and Ms. Simmons’ classes to paint bright, cheerful signs displayed on the sides of the arbor, creating a welcoming space for all who walk through.
This project is a wonderful example of how students, teachers, and community partners can work together to create something meaningful. By combining creativity, teamwork, and a commitment to enhancing their environment, the students of Pieter B. Coeymans are not only beautifying their school but also learning valuable lessons about collaboration, sustainability, and community pride. The new arbor walkway is now a vibrant and welcoming space, one that will be enjoyed by students, staff, and visitors for years to come!
