This school year, the 5th graders from Pieter B. Coeymans Elementary worked on a heartwarming initiative called Joyful Generations, building meaningful connections with local seniors through creativity and community service.
In partnership with Senior Projects of Ravena, the students dedicated time throughout the school year to brighten the lives of older adults in our community. Their project began in the winter when the students crafted handmade Christmas and Valentine’s Day cards, which were delivered by Meals on Wheels, along with holiday meals. These thoughtful gestures were meant to bring smiles and warmth during the colder months.
As spring approached, the students shifted their focus to creating colorful centerpieces for the senior center. These cheerful decorations were designed to bring the spring indoors, helping to brighten the shared gathering space.
To cap off the school year and this great initiative, the 5th graders took a field trip to the Senior Projects of Ravena. There, they worked together to serve meals, share the no-bake desserts they prepared before their visit, and spend some time together. Students also presented a final round of handmade cards and enjoyed conversations with their new friends.
Joyful Generations has been a celebration of kindness across ages, reminding our students of the simple joy that comes from connection and care. This not only built a connection with local seniors but also taught our students the value of empathy, service, and community.
Thank you to the Senior Projects of Ravena for the partnership to make this project a success.
