Music In Our Schools Month Celebrated Across RCS

Each year, the RCS Central School District and Music Department celebrate Music In Our Schools Month (MIOSM) throughout March. This annual celebration highlights the importance of music education and the many ways it supports student growth, both academically and personally.

Music programs across RCS continue to provide students with meaningful opportunities to express themselves creatively, build confidence, and connect with others. From concerts to classroom learning, the month serves as a reminder of how vital music education is to a well-rounded experience.

“March has been a busy month for the RCS Music Department,” said K-12 Art and Music Curriculum Content Specialist and High School Choral Director Michelle McLoughlin. “From the musical to the concerts, these events have all been reminders of the important role music plays within our schools.”

At A.W. Becker Elementary School, students have been actively engaged in a variety of musical experiences across all grade levels. Fifth grade students are wrapping up a three-month ukulele unit by selecting and performing a song of their choice for their classmates. In third and fourth grade, students are building their recorder skills in preparation for their June concert, while also working toward earning belts through the popular “Recorder Karate” program.

Younger students are also exploring music in exciting ways. Kindergarten through second grade students are learning about instruments of the orchestra through well-known works. In past years, kindergarten students have had the opportunity to attend a live performance by the Albany Symphony Orchestra, with plans for this year still to be announced.

This school year also marks an exciting addition to the program: the introduction of instrumental lessons beginning in fourth grade. Providing students with earlier access to instruments helps build foundational skills and deepens their understanding and appreciation of music.

According to the National Association for Music Education, Music In Our Schools Month has been celebrated for 40 years. What began as a single day in 1973 grew into a month-long celebration in 1985, recognizing the lasting impact of school music programs nationwide.

Although March is coming to a close, music remains an important part of student life at RCS. Students will continue to showcase their talents at upcoming NYSSMA Solo and Ensemble Festivals this spring, along with Middle School Drama Club performances and spring concerts.

The RCS community looks forward to seeing—and hearing—all that our students and staff will accomplish in the months ahead.
