Youth Art Month Continues: Two RCS seniors selected for the 2023 High School Juried Regional Art Show at Albany Center Gallery

As Youth Art Month continues, the RCS Central High School and Art Department are pleased to announce that two seniors, Arika Vogel and Elizabeth Robertson, have been selected to participate in the prestigious 24th Annual High School Regional Juried Exhibition at Albany Center Gallery

Both pieces of artwork were created as part of their sustained investigation unit, which they worked on for the AP 2D Art and Design course they both took last year. Each of them worked on their series for several months, putting a lot of time, effort, and heart into these pieces!

Senior Arika Vogel submitted her piece, Untitled. A mixed media piece depicting a face in four different manners. “Photographs are often used for references and interpreted in different ways,” said Ms. Vogel. “In this series, two photographs are explored; both are of the same women, but with different facial expressions. I wanted to delve into how material choices would affect the overall feel of each image and how it is received.”

Senior Elizabeth Robertson submitted her work titled Walking for Water. “How can I take photographs in a way to honestly represent what is happening around me? I wanted to show what daily life is like for the people of Wellingara BA, The Gambia,” said Ms. Robertson. “Using photojournalism, I was able to capture the physical feelings and emotions of the people and animals. This allows the viewer to connect to a culture and place they may never visit or hear of again.”

The show, put on by the Capital Area Art Supervisors, Region 6 New York State Teachers Association, and The Albany Center Gallery, opens on March 24, 2023, closing on Saturday, April 22. If you have the time, stop by and view the work of our talented students! The gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday, from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., and is located at 488 Broadway, Suite 107, Albany.

“We are thrilled to have two students selected for the show this year,” said High School Art Teacher Mrs. Wallace. “I have had the pleasure of working with these students over the past few years, and watching them grow into confident, thoughtful, and creative artists has been an absolute joy. I cannot wait to see what they create next!”

This year, 28 school districts across the Captial Region submitted 573 pieces overall for consideration. The jurors were Kim Tateo, Belinda Colón, and Tony Iadicicco, who were all very impressed by the amazing works in a range of media produced by area high school students in their art classes. Ultimately, only 107 works of art were selected to be in the show.

Huge congratulations to Ms. Robertson and Ms. Vogel for this impressive accomplishment! Wonderful job!
