RCS Seniors Return as Authors to Share Their Stories With Young Readers

RCS seniors from Ms. Caprio’s Creative Writing class continued a beloved tradition this year as they shared their original picture books with younger RCS students. For the first time, the high school class was split into two groups, with one traveling to Pieter B. Coeymans Elementary and the other heading to A.W. Becker Elementary.

Throughout this writing unit, seniors wrote, illustrated, and designed their own picture books, experimenting with a range of artistic styles. Some opted for fully hand-drawn illustrations, while others explored digital graphic design techniques to bring their characters and settings to life.

During their visits, the high school writers read aloud in small groups, guiding younger students through their stories and answering their thoughtful questions. The books themselves covered themes such as kindness, adventure, friendship, and the importance of helping others.

For a number of seniors, the experience felt like a full-circle moment as they revisited the elementary schools they once attended, reconnecting with teachers who helped spark their love of reading and writing years earlier.

This project continues to foster creativity, storytelling skills, and confidence among our high school writers, while also sparking imagination and a love of reading in our youngest learners.
