Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk High School students joined peers from across the Capital Region at Proctors Theatre on April 29 for the Elevating Student Voices (ESV) Youth Summit, a Capital Region BOCES initiative focused on student-led dialogue around issues such as mental health, racism, and school safety.
Representing RCS were seniors Owen Smith, Nico Bonilla, Jillian Decker, and freshman Janelle Williams, who have participated in a year-long effort centered on student voice, equity, and positive change. At the event, they connected with students from other districts and explored initiatives aimed at creating more inclusive school communities.
A highlight of the day was senior Owen Smith serving as a moderator for the Community Leadership Panel, where he helped guide discussions with local leaders on elevating underrepresented voices and fostering inclusion.
The EVS celebration provided a meaningful opportunity for our students to collaborate, share ideas, and build connections focused on creating more inclusive school communities. RCS is proud of these students for representing the district with thoughtfulness, leadership, and pride.
The RCS Diversity Club is currently exploring a potential name change to “Elevating Student Voices” to better reflect its student-driven mission, and is eager to expand these conversations to the middle and elementary school levels. While schools often emphasize the ways in which we are alike, there is still important work to be done in embracing and understanding what makes us different. Both ideas can coexist and strengthen a community. This year, the club’s focus is on increasing awareness and participation, building a stronger presence, and encouraging more students to join the conversation. If you are interested in joining the conversation or want to get involved, reach out to RCS High School Social Worker Tricia Morgan or students in the Diversity Club.
