Middle School Quidditch Week Brings Magic to P.E.

A little magic filled the gym last week as RCS Middle School students took part in an exciting Quidditch unit during physical education classes. Students in grades 6–8 were sorted into their houses and competed throughout the week to see which team would rise to the top, with every match feeling like a race for the House Cup.

To build school spirit, teachers and staff also joined in the fun by aligning themselves with different houses and cheering on students during each class. Points earned in every game contributed to a cumulative house total, creating a week-long competition that kept students engaged, as the standings shifted with every match.

The adapted version of Quidditch brought the wizarding game to life in a creative and active way. Students took on a variety of roles, including Chasers, Beaters, Seekers, and Goalies. Chasers worked together to score using a slightly deflated volleyball (the “Quaffle”), aiming for one of three elevated goals. Offensive players carried pool noodles as “brooms,” adding an extra challenge to movement and coordination.

Meanwhile, Beaters used gator skin balls as “Bludgers” to disrupt play, sending opponents on a quick run around the goals if hit. Each team also had one Seeker, whose goal was to catch the Golden Snitch, a small yellow ball attached to a runner dressed in yellow, who weaved through the playing area trying to avoid capture. Catching the Snitch earned a team 30 points and ended the round.

Throughout the week, students across all three grades combined their efforts to contribute to their house totals. The final standings were:

  • Hufflepuff: 427

  • Ravenclaw: 403

  • Gryffindor: 384

  • Slytherin: 279

In the end, Hufflepuff claimed the RCS Middle School Quidditch Championship!

This unique unit not only encouraged teamwork, strategy, and physical activity but also created a memorable experience filled with school spirit, creativity, and fun. Quidditch Week was truly a magical success at RCS Middle School, and we can't wait for the games to resume next school year!
