Transportation to Childcare Location Request

Families who need bus transportation to or from a childcare or alternate location for the 2023-24 school year are asked to complete a Transportation to Childcare Location Request Form (click here to access) at the beginning of each school year, by August 1, or as soon as the change is known (see below for more details).

Transportation will be provided to childcare locations for Grades Pre-K through 8, subject to these guidelines:

  1. Written requests for service must be submitted on Transportation Request for Childcare Location Form by August 1st each year. Late forms cannot be guaranteed transportation for the beginning of the school year.

  2. Requests for transportation to childcare locations for elementary students must be within the child’s school catchment area. For example, students from A.W. Becker can only be transported to a childcare location within A.W. Becker’s catchment area.

  3. Multiple childcare locations over the course of each week will not be accepted. The pick-up location and drop-off location may be different addresses but cannot differ from day to day.

  4. Changes of childcare locations will not be accepted from August 15 through to the third Monday of September.

  5. Requests must be renewed each school year and for summer school/programs.

  6. Any permanent change during the school year, should be submitted at least five days in advance and be made on the request form.

Transportation to Private & Charter Schools

In order to obtain transportation to private or charter schools outside of RCS, parents must complete the Out-of-District Transportation Request Form by April 1 of the preceding school year, or within 30 days of moving into the district.

Students must live within 15 miles of the school that they are requesting to attend.

Students must also be registered with the RCS district. See the Private School Enrollment page for more information.

Other important information

Emergency bus evacuation drills
Each year, RCS, in compliance with New York State Education Law, holds three evacuation drills. During the 15-minute drills, drivers explain bus safety rules and regulations, such as proper behavior and crossing procedures as well as how to locate safety equipment and the emergency exits. Students also learn how to secure the bus, operate the two-way radio and safely evacuate the vehicle in the event of an emergency.

Instruments on the bus
The RCS Transportation Department asks that for safety reasons, only musical instruments small enough to fit on a student’s lap may be transported on the school bus. Parents should make other arrangements to get larger band instruments to school.

Self-Transportation
If you will driving your child(ren) to and from school daily, or if your high school student will be driving themselves, please let the Transportation Department know. This will help us create more accurate and efficient bus routes and provide better service to all students.

Similarly, if your child(ren) will not need bus transportation for a temporary period of time, please let us know so that the bus driver can bypass your stop until needed.

Become a school bus driver!
Looking for a fun and exciting part-time position? Consider becoming a substitute bus driver for the RCS Central School District.

Training will be provided to qualified applicants. To learn more about this exciting opportunity to earn extra money while working in a congenial environment that benefits students, contact the Transportation Department at (518) 756-5241.
