PBC Starbees Café Makes the Local News! Pieter B. Coeymans’ very own Starbees café reopened earlier this June with a brand-new storefront! What began as a mobile coffee cart has now transformed into a cozy café space just outside the STEAM room. Run by students in grades K–5, Starbees is a life skills project where students practice language, social, math, and communication skills by selling coffee, tea, and hot chocolate to staff on Friday mornings. Proceeds go toward a charitable cause chosen by the students themselves. We’re excited to share that Starbees was recently featured on News Channel 10! 🎥 Watch the segment here: https://www.news10.com/video/student-run-coffee-cart-raises-money-for-charities/10817094/ 📖 Read more about the project here: https://www.rcscsd.org/article/2246651

A small group of RCS Middle Schoolers stepped up as tour guides this week, welcoming next year’s 6th-grade class from A.W. Becker! These student leaders showed future middle schoolers around the building, answered questions, and shared what life is really like in middle school. It was a great opportunity for our students to lead with pride and help ease the transition for the incoming class.

This week, 5th graders from A.W. Becker took a field trip to RCS Middle School to walk the halls and meet some new faces! These students will be moving up to middle school next year, where they'll experience lockers, changing classes, and having multiple teachers for different subjects for the first time. The visit gave them a chance to ask questions, connect with current middle schoolers, and get comfortable in their new school environment.

This year, the RCS Music Department was thrilled to expand its annual Meet the Instruments Night, welcoming both third and fourth-grade students and their families! This special event gave students a hands-on opportunity to explore a variety of instruments, get inspired, and start thinking about joining our growing RCS music program. A big thank you to the staff of the RCS Music Department, members of the High School Tri-M Music Honor Society, and other talented high school instrumentalists who helped make the night a success. And a special thank you to John Keal Music Company for generously providing demo instruments, cleaning materials, and staff support. Together, we’re building a strong future for music at RCS!

Pieter B. Coeymans Elementary will be closed tomorrow, Wednesday, May 14, 2025, so that we may continue the cleanup from today. As you know, the fire alarm and sprinkler systems were activated, causing the building to evacuated and students and staff to be sent home early. This was caused by a fire that occurred in an upstairs bathroom that was, thankfully, immediately extinguished by our fire suppression systems. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Our custodial staff worked this afternoon to clean up the water that was on the floors and walls of the first and second floors near where this incident occurred. There was some water damage on the walls and ceiling tiles, and some fire damage in the bathroom itself. The larger issue is that smoke spread from the area of the fire to nearby classrooms and hallway. A professional fire remediation team has been on site all afternoon attending to the cleanup and will need to continue their work into tomorrow in order to ensure a clean and safe learning environment for everyone. We expect PBC to reopen on Thursday and will notify families by 5 pm on Wednesday if those plans change. Unfortunately, student belongings will need to remain in classrooms until the school reopens on Thursday.
